Memorabilia #1

This has to be the first one.

Sonic Youth, Arena Parco Nord, Bologna, Italy, September 4th, 2004.

I started taking pictures at gigs. Moreover Sonic Youth have been my soundtrack for the last 10 years, and they still are.

Memorabilia

I have recently been re-organising my archive, looking through the pictures I have taken over the last 6 years, starting from when photography was just a passion, until recent years during which it has become a profession as well as a passion. Well, I found a lot of crap. But I also found some dated images which, I can now see, shaped my approach to photography today. They are quite random, ranging from gigs to architecture, and from travel to just helping friends with their projects.

Once a week I am going to add one of these pictures to this new nostalgic category of my blog, called Memorabilia.

I Was There

I Was There is my latest project. Click here to see the online version of the book.

There are places and situations in which life becomes a performance, a true theatrical act.  Situations in which being seen to be there, and playing a certain role, is the key reason that justifies one’s presence.Public relations rule our society, whether we like it or not.  And the first impression is often all we can count on.  ‘Setting’ and ‘personal front’, as sociologist Erving Goffman termed them, define the environment in which this performance takes place. I observed class, clothing, sex, age, size, looks, posture, speech patterns, facial expressions, and bodily gestures, whilst necessarily being a performance myself.  I chose to focus on international cultural and fashion events because here the struggle to please, and the anxiety to be seen, is most evident.  The images were taken at Venice Architecture Biennal, Venice Film Festival, London and Milan Fashion Weeks, Frieze Art Fair and Paris Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC).
